Chances are excellent that if you have been to a dentist before, you have had a cleaning. However, chances are also quite good that you have some questions about dental cleanings and what’s going on while you’re in our chair. To take away the mystery, we invite you to look over the following information about what you can expect. We understand that patients often feel much more relaxed and optimistic about scheduling preventive care when they feel educated. To ensure you feel further empowered, we also encourage you to ask questions during your upcoming visit.
For Healthy Teeth and Gums
How do your gums look? Are they are healthy pink color? Do you brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily? For patients with healthy daily habits and healthy gum tissue, we typically offer routine dental cleanings. This means you will receive a comprehensive cleaning beginning with the gentle techniques of our highly skilled dental hygienist. We will remove the plaque you cannot address at home (rest easy, there’s nothing you can do about this, even with extreme attention to detail). Then, once we have removed plaque from every surface of your teeth, we will polish your smile. Schedule your dental cleanings once every six months and continue your dental hygiene at home for a smile that remains healthy.
For Gums At Risk of Periodontal Disease
You may be at risk of periodontal disease if you have had a significant amount of plaque resting on your teeth, particularly if it has moved beneath your gumline and hardened into a substance called tartar. Plaque and tartar are filled with bacteria that irritate gum tissue, leading to inflammation and infection. For patients at risk of or experiencing gum disease, we may suggest a deep cleaning to remove the hardened plaque. This may require two or more visits to complete, which means you may need to see us more often than once every six months until your gums return to excellent health.
